Devil’s Purse Brewing Co. Celebrates Second Anniversary
New 16 oz. cans, a sister brewery in Rhode Island, and signing with a local distributor help fuel expansion for this young Cape Cod brewery
SOUTH DENNIS, Mass., -- The week leading up to Memorial Day Weekend has been busy for Devil’s Purse Brewing Co., as local shelves in package stores around Cape Cod are stocked for the first time with cans, and fresh kegs of beer are delivered to local draft accounts.
The silver 16 oz. cans of Surfman’s Check ESB and solid white “tall-boys” of Handline Kölsch are from the first batches of beer brewed at Devil’s Purse’s sister brewery, Isle Brewers Guild (IBG), located in Pawtucket, R.I. Devil’s Purse is one of the partners at this new craft brewing cooperative along with Narragansett Beer, Newburyport Brewing Co., Farmer Willie’s Ginger Beer, and Sons of Liberty Spirits.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with the look and the taste of the beers coming from our brewing partner at IBG,” said Mike Segerson, cofounder of Devil’s Purse. “It’s great to finally offer cans of Kölsch and ESB to not only our customers who visit the brewery but also to all of the local retail stores that have been patiently waiting for Devil’s Purse cans.”
As part of the lead up to Devil’s Purse’s Second Anniversary at its South Dennis location, Segerson mentioned how the brewery completed a small limited canning run of its Cuddy Queen Pale Ale and Table Beer (brewed with Denali and Motueka hops).
“It was great to finally be in a position to hire Iron Heart, and can a couple of our favorite recipes,” said Segerson. Based out of Portsmouth, N.H., Iron Heart is a mobile canning company that travels around to small breweries throughout New England to package beer.
Another milestone for Devil’s Purse this spring was partnering with local beer distributor Colonial Wholesale Beverage, based in Dartmouth, Mass.
“With all of the beer now being produced out of IBG our one delivery van was not going to cut it and we knew we would have to sign with a distributor,” said Matt Belson, cofounder of Devil’s Purse. “Signing with Colonial was a no-brainer based on their business reputation and coverage in the local market. And Colonials’ sales force includes some of the most knowledgeable and customer service focused reps in the craft beer business.”
Colonial took over sales and distribution for Devil’s Purse in April and has already expanded the availability of Devil’s Purse. The wholesaler’s territory includes Cape Cod, the islands, Bristol County and most of Plymouth County.
“Matt and Mike have done an incredible job launching Devil’s Purse and building their brand in just two short years,” said Frank Sousa III, owner of Colonial Wholesale Beverage. “We’re honored they chose to partner with Colonial and we are excited to be able to now offer these great tasting beers to all of our local accounts.”
To celebrate the brewery’s second year anniversary a party is being held at The Red Nun Bar and Grill in Dennis Port on Saturday, May 27, and a summer kick-off bash at the Beach House and Grill at Chatham Bars Inn on Monday, May 29.
“It’s been a fun and wild ride these first two years and we are excited about what’s in store for Devil’s Purse in the years to come,” said Belson. “But all of this success would not be possible without the support of our families, friends and the tremendous community that has grown and continues to support Devil’s Purse Brewing Company. And to everyone from all of us at Devil’s Purse we send our profound thanks and gratitude.”
