At Devil’s Purse we strive to design and brew beers that are approachable to a variety of tastes, from the most discerning craft beer enthusiast, to those who are just dipping their toes in the craft beer pool. Many of our beers are American styles heavily influenced by their older European cousins. While most of our beers reflect the elegance of simplicity, we enjoy the creativity and experimentation that can happen in the brewhouse. Above all is our commitment to using only the highest quality ingredients and great care in making our beer.
Our Core Beers:
Our interpretation of a German-style kolsch, mildly hopped with Vanguard. This unfiltered rendition has pleasant aromas akin to lemon zest and cut grass, with a dry finish and refreshing taste.
5% ABV 18 IBU Unfiltered
Cape Cod is truly a fishing paradise. When we're not brewing beer we're usually fishing (or at least thinking about fishing during the winter). For many local kids their first tackle was a handline--just a line, weight, hook, bait and something to wrap the line around. Many a scup or small schoolie has been caught by this method, demonstrating that sometimes the simplest of things can work just fine. This simple approach to fishing is the same way we view our kolsch--simple, fun and delicious.
Surfman's Check™ ESB
Hopped with Northdown and East Kent Goldings. A classic, malt-forward style driven by English malts. Taste is well-rounded, with a sweet and spicy up front flavor, dry finish, and a cleansing hop bite.
5.2% ABV 32 IBU Unfiltered
Over a century ago, the Cape shoreline was dotted with lifeboat stations manned by members of the U.S. Lifesaving Service - the predecessor of today's U.S. Coast Guard. Ever vigilant to render aid to foundered vessels, surfmen from each station would patrol sections of the beach in all weather conditions. When two surfmen would meet at the end of their patrols, they would exchange their "surfman's check," a badge with their assigned number and station, as proof that they had completed their patrol.
Today, accomplished and highly skilled Boatswain's Mates in the Coast Guard can be certified as a Surfman, and awarded a Surfman's Check for their level of expertise. Our bold and flavorful Surfman's Check ESB pays homage to the U.S. Lifesaving Service crews of the past, as well as the men and women serving in today's Coast Guard who are "Always Ready" to go into harm's way to save a life.
Pollock Rip™ IPA
Packed with Warrior, Apollo, and Chinook hops. This solid IPA has a dry finish with a perceived sweetness and spicy flavors to balance bitterness with added aromas of pithy citrus fruits.
7.3% ABV 68 IBU Unfiltered
Pollock Rip Shoal is centered about three miles east of the southerly end of Monomoy Island in Chatham. For mariners this area was considered particularly treacherous, and between 1849 and 1969 eight different light vessels served at this dangerous open water station. This name of this beer honors the stalwart lightship crews that manned their station day and night through all kinds of sea conditions.
Cuddy Queen™ American Pale Ale
Cuddy Queen is our American Pale Ale dry-hopped exclusively with Mandarina Bavaria, a delicate German hop with aromas of orange, making this an easy-drinking pale ale.
The release of Cuddy Queen at the start of the Autumnal Equinox is by design. For local Cape Cod mariners and fishermen this is a time when collars get turned up as the days on the water become cooler, damper and a little darker. Cuddy Queen captures this sea going spirit as the desire for the warmth and shelter of the cuddy cabin becomes stronger.
Skatemouth™ Pale Ale
A malt -forward Pale Ale. Sweet malt flavor derived from flaked rye, adding a hint of spice character. The beer is finished with an infusion of UK Challenger hops providing hints of spicy orange marmalade.
6% ABV 35 IBU Unfiltered
No real mystery behind this name other than it relates to a devil's purse (a skate egg sac). After coming up with the idea for a brewery name we would often banter back and forth about beer names while brewing. Skatemouth was the result of a very, very late night of brewing.
Intertidal™ Oyster Stout
Stout with extremely dark color and roasted notes. This beer is brewed using locally harvested oysters, which add a pleasant minerality to complement this stout's big, malty flavor.
A sequence of single-hop IPAs, each with a unique grain bill that showcases the individual character of the hop.
Our new Belgian-style wit is made with Pilsner malt, wheat, flaked wheat, flaked oats, orange blossom honey and the addition of bitter orange peel and coriander seed.
We then used a strain of yeast available from our friends over at bootleg biology. The wit is delicious, with floral and citrus aromas and a soft palate.
More information about this incredible yeast can be found at: bootlegbiology.com/product/chardonnay/
A succession of hoppy session ales, South Dennis style. Table beers can be found at the brewery during warmer months.
Shiso Berry Ale
The grain bill for this beer is made with Pilsner, wheat, flaked rice and flaked oats. We added a small bittering and aroma addition of New Zealand Pacifica hops. A large amount of Shiso leaf was then added which contributes a bitter, herbal character to the beer. Our Shiso leaf was locally sourced from our friends at Punkhorn Farm in Brewster. After primary fermentation was competed we re-fermented the beer with the addition of blackberry and raspberry puree. The berries create the aroma of this beer, but the palate is dry and finishes with hints of mint and green tea.
Sevenstones™ Double IPA
Based on our Pollock Rip IPA recipe. Secondary fermentation with Brettanomyces Clausenii. Dry with lots of complexity. Notes of pineapple and stone fruits accented by smoky, spicy earthy aromas with hints of barnyard.
Sevenstones Double IPA is the third release in the brewery’s Light Vessel Series of India Pale Ales. The name comes after the Sevenstones Light Vessel moored on the Seven Stones Reef 15 miles off Land's End, Cornwall in the United Kingdom. The yeast strain of Brettanomyces Clausenii was also originally discovered in the U.K.
Hen & Chickens™ Double IPA
Made with New Zealand and Australian hops and a mix of Pilsner and Floor Malted Maris Otter malts. This is an easy drinking Double IPA with a big tropical nose reminiscent of mango. Extremely limited seasonal availability
8% ABV 85 IBU Unfiltered
Dock Lizard™ Imperial Spiced Ale
Dock Lizard is inspired by a popular cocktail made with rum and ginger beer. It is brewed with molasses, ginger, lime juice, and lime zest, and then aged on oak wood spirals soaked in dark rum.
8.5% Alc. Unfiltered (Brewed once a year)
Scallop Bag™ American Strong Ale
This beer uses Maris Otter as a base malt along with malted and flaked rye, accentuated by English crystal malt. UK Challenger hops add flavor and bitterness, and Citra hops in the whirlpool provide additional flavor and aroma. Scallop Bag is smooth, fruity, and spicy, perfect for the cold winter months.
9.3% Alc. Unfiltered (Brewed once a year)
South Channel Imperial British Stout™
8.3% Alc. 50 IBU Unfiltered
Skywave™ Provisional Saison
This provisional saison is brewed with tradition in mind. We use U.S.A. grown noble-esque hops, prodigious dry hopping, French saison yeast plus two strains of Brettanomyces. This dry, funky, effervescent, highly drinkable beer is conditioned in champagne bottles and gets more complex with age. Offered in 750 ml bottles.
Unfiltered. Bottle conditioned.
Radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi began sending wireless radio transmissions to England at a station he built in South Wellfleet in 1903. Following this historic event Cape Cod has played an important part in radio and trans-atlantic communications.
