Handline Kolsch

Our interpretation of a German-style kolsch. Mildly hopped with Vanguard. This unfiltered rendition has pleasant aromas akin to lemon zest and cut grass, with a dry finish and refreshing taste.

  5% ABV 18 IBU   Unfiltered

Cape Cod is truly a fishing paradise. When we're not brewing beer we're usually fishing (or at least thinking about fishing during the winter). For many local kids their first tackle was a handline--just a line, weight, hook, bait and something to wrap the line around. Many a scup or small schoolie has been caught by this method, demonstrating that sometimes the simplest of things can work just fine. This simple approach to fishing is the same way we view our kolsch--simple, fun and delicious.

Surfman's Check™ ESB

Style notes:

Hopped with Northdown and East Kent Goldings. A classic, malt-forward style driven by Warminster floor malted Maris Otter with small amounts of Simpsons dark English crystal and a touch of Crisp Pale chocolate malt. Taste is well-rounded, with a sweet and spicy up front flavor, dry finish, and a cleansing hop bite.

 5.2% ABV   32 IBU   Unfiltered

The name:

Over a century ago the Atlantic facing shore of Cape Cod was dotted with lifeboat stations manned by the U.S. Lifesaving Service--predecessor of today's U.S. Coast Guard. Ever vigilant to a foundered vessel surfman from each station would patrol sections of the beach in all types of weather. When two surfman would meet at the ends of their patrols they would exchange their "surfman's check" (a badge with their serial number and assigned life saving station) as proof they had completed their patrol. Today, accomplished and highly skilled Boatswains Mates in the US Guard can be certified as "surfman" and awarded a surfman check to designated their level of expertise. Our bold and flavorful ESB pays homage to the U.S.  Lifesaving Service crews of the past and the men and woman of the present day Coast Guard who are "Always Ready"  to go into harm's way to save a life.

Pollock Rip IPA

Packed with Warrior, Apollo, and Chinook hops. This solid IPA has a dry finish with a perceived sweetness and spicy flavors to balance bitterness with added aromas of pithy citrus fruits.

 7.5% ABV   68 IBU   Unfiltered

Pollock Rip Shoal is centered about three miles east of the southerly end of Monomoy Island in Chatham. For mariners this area was considered particularly treacherous, and between 1849 and 1969 eight different light vessels served at this dangerous open water station. This name of this beer honors the stalwart lightship crews that manned their station day and night through all kinds of sea conditions.

Rotating/Frequent Availability:

Skatemouth Pale Ale

Style notes:

A malt -forward Pale Ale. Sweet malt flavor derived from Warminster floor malted Maris Otter with a delicate edge brought from Dingemans Pilsen Malt.  Rye malt adds a hint of spice character. The beer is finished with an infusion of UK Challenger hops providing notes of spicy orange marmalade.

 6% ABV 35 IBU   Unfiltered

The name:

No real mystery behind this name other than it relates to a devil's purse (a skate egg sac). After coming up with the idea for a brewery name we would often banter back and forth about beer names while brewing. Skatemouth was the result of a very, very late night of brewing.

Cuddy Queen™ American Pale Ale

Cuddy Queen is our American Pale Ale dry-hopped exclusively with German Hallertaü Blanc. This delicate German hop has aromas of white grape, pineapple and lemon accented by a wild, grassy quality reminiscent of the sauvignon blanc grape where Hallertaü Blanc derived its name. This is an easy drinking pale ale at 6% ABV.

6% ABV

The release of Cuddy Queen at the start of the Autumnal Equinox is by design. For local Cape Cod mariners and fishermen this is a time when collars get turned up as the days on the water become cooler, damper and a little darker. Cuddy Queen captures this sea going spirit as the desire for the warmth and shelter of the cuddy cabin becomes stronger.

Stonehorse IPA Series

Single hop IPA series. Each beer will have a slightly unique grain bill to help showcase the character of each hop.

1. Our first Stonehorse IPA features Apollo hops. This hefty beer  was brewed with a large portion of malted oats (Simpson's Golden Naked Oats) that creates a smooth viscous body that balances the bitterness and adds a dense nutty aroma to the finished beer. Savory, earthy aromas with funky and fruity tones intertwine to make a complex beer that really showcases the dank, resinous nature of Apollo hops.

The beer begins with a grain bill of maris otter and flaked rye, and fermentation was undertaken with a blend of dry English ale and American Ale yeasts. Tasting notes include a bready, spicy, and fruity character.

Shiso Berry Ale

The grain bill for this beer is made with Pilsner, wheat, flaked rice and flaked oats. We added a small bittering and aroma addition of New Zealand Pacifica hops. A large amount of Shiso leaf was then added which contributes a bitter, herbal character to the beer. Our Shiso leaf was locally sourced from our friends at Punkhorn Farm in Brewster. After primary fermentation was competed we re-fermented the beer with the addition of blackberry and raspberry puree. The berries create the aroma of this beer, but the palate is dry and finishes with hints of mint and green tea.

Sea Trials #3: English-Style Bitter Conditioned w/ Brett. bruxellensis var. Drei.

Sometimes the inspiration fo a new or variation of an existing beer recipe is fostered by circumstance and opportunity that can pop up in the brewery. For example, the idea for Sea Trials #3 evolved when we realized we would have a bottle-conditioning pitch of yeast from our Sea Trials #4 (100% Brett Pale Ale) available. We have always had an affinity for the ESB (Extra Special Bitter) style, so we thought we would re-work our Surfman's Check ESB recipe and put it into a bottle with Brettanomyces bruxellinsis var. Drei. The lightly funky Brettanomyces yeast is fruity with aromas of dried fruit and chocolate. Produced in 500 ml bottles.
